MICROSUCTION AND IRRIGATION -Manchester

Microsuction Harley Street Hearing

Microsuction

The procedure is quick, safe and painless, and doesn’t involve putting liquid into your ear. We use a gentle suction device is used to remove earwax under a microscope.

Irrigation

Ear irrigation is a painless procedure, but your ear may feel strange as the water is sprayed around your ear canal.  A pressurised flow of water, using an ear irrigator, is used to remove earwax.  The water is a similar temperature to your body.

What is Ear Wax?

Wax (or Cerumen)  is produced by glands in the ear canal. It is an important part of the ear’s natural defense because it has natural lubricating properties and contains an anti-bacterial agent to help prevent infections.  Because it is sticky and moist, it helps to trap foreign bodies and debris. Wax only forms in the outer third of the ear canal and usually, slowly works its way out of the ear, bringing debris with it. Rather like a natural cleaning system for the ear.

When does wax become impacted?

Wax is most likely to block the ear canal when it is pushed into the  ear-canal by cotton-buds, hairpins, paperclips and other objects that people  put in their ears.  The most recognisable  symptom is partial loss of hearing but other symptoms include itching,  coughing, ringing, fullness and sometimes pain.   Wax should only be removed by trained professionals and is not a DIY job. Don’t be fooled by Ear Candles either.  Before prodding a hole  in your eardrum or dripping hot wax on your face, or even setting alight the  curtains, have your wax removed by a professional.  It’s cheaper in the long run.

What to do if you have a wax build up?

You might experience some hearing loss and your ears may feel dry, itchy or painful and  A couple of drops of olive oil, or softening drops, in the ear canal administered 2-4 times a day can help to soften the wax and one of our registered Clinical Ear Practitioners can remove it for you safely and painlessly.  The cost is £60.

“My GP suggested I contact North West Hearing to get my ears cleared of wax urgently because the blockage and the loud buzzing was making me feel increasingly anxious and unbalanced. Sam immediately reassured me that I would get sorted soon – this was on a Friday and my appointment was made for Monday – big relief!!

At my appointment, Greg was very understanding about my situation as I already have tinnitus and I was worried it would make it worse. He used the most reassuring method and I was feeling great in minutes. He also gave me lots of positive things to think about with regards to the management of my tinnitus and I feel much more confident about the future now. I feel quite inspired to make some positive changes – thank you SO much!

I’d absolutely recommend North West Hearing, well worth the money to be seen quickly and to be treated so well!” Helen Stevenson
