What to expect during your hearing test

hearing test appointment

Booking a private hearing test is one of the best ways to stay on top of your ear health and catch any signs of hearing decline early. While most people are familiar with regular visits to the dentist or optician, fewer understand what to expect during a hearing test.

Fortunately, scheduling a private hearing test is quick and easy. You can book an appointment directly with highly qualified clinical audiologists, bypassing the need for a GP referral and avoiding long wait times. This ensures you receive the most accurate and timely assessment of your hearing health.

What should you expect?

Private hearing tests are specifically designed to provide a thorough and detailed assessment, delivering the most accurate results for your hearing.

During your 90-minute consultation, your audiologist will guide you through:

An examination of your ear and auditory canal will be conducted using a tool called an otoscope. This allows your audiologist to inspect the inside of your ear, checking for any damage to the canal or eardrum, as well as blockages that could be contributing to hearing loss. The procedure is quick, non-intrusive, and no more uncomfortable than wearing earphones.

A comprehensive audiometric hearing assessment will be conducted, which may include speech discrimination testing if needed. This part of the assessment evaluates your ability to hear various sounds, pitches, and frequencies. You’ll be seated in a soundproof room and asked to wear noise-cancelling headphones to block out any background noise. You’ll also be given a button to press whenever you hear a sound. Your audiologist will record your responses on an audiogram, a graph that visually represents how well you are detecting different sound frequencies.

A lifestyle assessment will then be the next step to get a better understanding of your individual needs and requirements. You’ll be asked questions about your hearing history, noise exposure, any symptoms of hearing loss, and lifestyle factors that may be impacting your daily life. This information helps your audiologist recommend the most suitable hearing solutions tailored to your specific requirements.

After your consultation

After your hearing test, you’ll receive a copy of your audiogram to keep for future reference. It’s important to store this document safely, as it can be useful when preparing for your next annual hearing test.

Your results will be available immediately, and your audiologist will review them with you, explaining what everything means. These results will help guide any decisions about possible treatment.

If any issues are detected during the test, your audiologist will discuss your treatment options with you, which may range from ear wax removal to hearing aids. Whatever the issue, finding the right treatment will set you on the path to improved hearing.

Our team of ear care practitioners are available for ear wax removal appointments – £60 for both ears. If you’re having difficulty obtaining a GP appointment, Call 0161 491 1943 or e-mail below. Struggling with blocked ears?

Are your ears feeling dry, itchy, or painful? Experiencing earache or slight hearing loss? It’s likely that you have a build-up of excessive ear wax, which can be quickly and easily resolved with professional ear wax removal.

Understanding Ear Wax Build-Up

Ear wax is a perfectly normal secretion of the ear canal, which is important to our ear’s functions. As our ears self-clean, this wax will naturally be pushed out, which means, for the most part, ear wax should be left alone. However, in some cases, excess build-up can occur, which requires professional ear wax removal.

Importance of Professional Ear Wax Removal

As excessive wax can lead to pain, discomfort, and sometimes hearing loss, it’s important to remove any old wax that is causing these issues to provide immediate relief. Ear wax removal should always be performed by a professional audiologist to guarantee a safe procedure and effective results.

Microsuction Ear Wax Treatment

The gold standard technique in ear wax removal, microsuction is quick, safe, painless, and doesn’t involve putting liquid into your ear. Our team of ear care practitioners are fully qualified clinical audiologists who carry out microsuction with precision and accuracy.

Using high-spec examination microscopes with x20 magnification, our audiologists can work safely in the ear canal with full visibility and depth perception. Using a gentle suction device, any moderate ear wax build-up can then painlessly be removed from the ear canal providing instant relief.

Ear Irrigation

If ear wax build-up is more profound and a larger quantity of wax needs to be removed, irrigation is a safer, gentler, and much more effective alternative to the outdated ear syringing method. This method is not advised if you have an ear infection or a history of ear infections.

Using a specialised ear irrigator, our audiologists gently apply a low-pressure flow of body-temperature water to the upper ear canal wall which slowly flows out, bringing the wax with it.

Ear Wax Syringing: An Outdated Method

Ear syringing is an old-fashioned method of wax removal that is no longer considered to be best practice or safe. The modern alternative is electronic irrigation.

Book in for a De-Wax Appointment

Ear wax removal should never be performed at home. While it can be tempting, trying to pull the blockage out using your hands or a cotton bud can cause further damage and exacerbate the problem.

Quick, painless, and immediately effective, ear wax extraction carried out by a professional is the best and only solution to providing relief.

Lumity new hearing aids

New rechargeable hearing aids

For better hearing in background noise.

The most desired request from current hearing aid users is ‘better hearing in background noise’ so this is the main focus for Phonak’s new Audeo Lumity, helping you to fully immerse in conversations in any environment.

Lumity Hearing Aid Features

There are two key developments:

    • StereoZoom 2.0 – designed to focus the microphones of the hearing aids forwards when the hearing aid user is in a noisy surroundings so you can hear what you are looking at with a smoother, more gradual adaption to the sound levels as they change. As the noise levels increase, there’s a gradual focus on the person in front and hopefully should remove that trapped in a bubble, blocked off feeling when you’re in background noise.
    •  SpeechSensor – a 360-degree speech detection algorithm allowing you to hear more conversations from all around you. Phonak say that approximately 80% of conversations come in front of us on a day-to-day basis, with 20% coming from the behind or to the side. This means you will pick up speech without having to turn your head towards the speaker.

In addition Lumity also includes:

  • Universal Bluetooth® connectivity
  • Exceptional sound
  • myPhonak app pairing for make adjustments, creating customised programs and optional goal settings. You also connect directly with your clinical audiologist who can provide remote assistance.

If you have hearing aids currently, or feel you may have hearing loss as you’re struggling to hear conversations in background noise call us for a consultation and you can demo these new Lumity hearing aids.
